About Spe’enhw (Camas Lily)

Patches of nearby spe’enhw provide the namesake for Camas House. Spe’enhw is a treasure of nature, and we are fortunate to be able to watch vibrant blue-purple blossoms transform patches of our property into carpets of colour each spring.

Native to the endangered Garry oak ecosystem on Vancouver Island, camas (spe’enhw in Hul’q’umi’num’) is deeply tied to the history and culture of the Coast Salish people. For millennia, its starchy bulbs have been a vital food source, carefully cultivated and harvested with profound respect for the land.

Our vision is to continue to grow our spe’enhw patches, and encourage the restoration of indigenous Pacific West Coast vegetation throughout the property.
